So yes, it left us in extreme shock and not only because Megan Boone's Elizabeth Keen character was still alive but also because of the Alexander Kirk admission to her after he kidnaps her that he is her father. The man addresses her as Masha (as in Masha Rostova daughter of the Russian Katarina Rostova), so we can expect to hear a lot of the name so long as she is his prisoner willingly or unwillingly.
The third season of 'The Blacklist' killed Keen in an unfortunate manner closer to the end of the season after she gave birth to her daughter with Tom Keen. The reason was probably related to Megan Boone's real life pregnancy and going into labor. However, soon the finale was to arrive and we were to find out that Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) faked her own death out of fear for her daughter from having Reddington (James Spader) being part of her life because the man comes with a package of trouble.
The discovery by Reddington that Keen is alive and that she faked her death in coordination with Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) and Mr. Kaplan (Susan Blommaert) got him extremely angry and her kidnapping fueled the fire even more.
Quick Recap
Blacklist is a series about Raymond Reddington a man who while being groomed for Admiral disappeared while coming home to visit his family for Christmas in 1990 resurfacing 4 years later selling classified information to the enemy and ending up being charged with treason in absentia. over the following 20 years he built a syndicate of contacts in the criminal and spy worlds and making his way to number 4 on the FBI's most wanted list.
The series starts with Reddington turning himself in to the FBI and offering to work with them provided he works with an Elizabeth Keen. Over time they develop a relationship as they fight the criminal masterminds on what Raymond called his blacklist. Over the course of three seasons of the series, Keen is accused of treason and she, along with the world finds out she is Masha Rostova, daughter of deceased Russian Spy Katarina Rostova. The entire force of the government fueled by individuals in high places, the CIA included who are involved in shady organizations and plots and are on Raymond's blacklist ends up on the tail of Elizabeth who with the help or Raymond evades capture. During the third season, Raymond whose relationship with Keen is now pretty strong, makes a deal that gets Elizabeth off the FBI's most wanted list, however for the murder of the US Attorney General she does not get her job in the FBI back.
Keen who gets pregnant with her ex husband's baby while rekindling her relationship with him ends up helping the FBI in a consulting capacity, the same way Reddington does and after her decision to remarry Tom, they get attacked at church by Mr. Solomon (Edi Gathegi), one of the major antagonists of the Third Season. Liz presumably dies after she gives birth leaving Reddington in depression and giving us one of the best episodes of the Blacklist ever as Reddington retires in a beach house and seemingly goes crazy talking to himself and imagining the presence of the woman who seems to be the love of his life, Katarina Rostova. Events unravel at the end of the season as indicated by this recap.
Worth noting that during the course of the show, Keen gets back memories as well of her shooting to kill her father to protect her mother from him.
Questions & Speculations
The first and most important question is about the spin-off of the Blacklist starring Ryan Eggold (as Tom Keen). Now that Elizabeth is alive how will the spin-off work or is it going to be a spin-off with benefits. The spin-off Blacklist: Redemption will revolve around Tom Keen hunting down for Mr. Solomon making the latter the main antagonist of the new series.
I believe Tom Keen cannot really be out of the mother series for good so if anything he will be starring in Redemption while frequently guest starring on the Blacklist.
There are many questions revolving around Alexander Kirk as well:
- Is Kirk Liz's father?
- If Kirk is in fact her father who did she shoot and kill as a child? Or did she even shoot anyone? Or did she actually shoot Kirk but never killed him?
- Was it Kirk that sent Reddington the bloody painting of Elizabeth with a knife? Or is Katarina as speculated by many fans still alive and she is the one who sent that portrait?
We know for a fact as well that come hell or high water Reddington will get Liz back from the grips of Kirk and in the words of Eli Pope from Scandal, Red is hell and high water.
On the subject of expectations news promise a stronger Liz and of course a very vengeful Red and the return of Katarina Rostova, be it in flashbacks or in present day is yet to be seen.
Final Verdict
As usual with the blacklist, its third season finale left us lost and wondering and wanting more. The Blacklist has always operated in that manner and this has always been a source of the show's success. It is too difficult for a show with such good writing and starring such and exceptional actor as James Spader to go bad at any point.
The Blacklist returns to NBC on September 22 and as usual with this show, viewer discretion is advised.
