Mid-Nite

The abilities however of all three versions of Mid-Nite included a keen ability to see in darkness at the cost of near blindness in sunlight, the use of visors and blackout smoke bombs to gain tactical advantage, and great martial arts skills. All three of them were very skilled physicians as well who served both humans and metahuman superheroes.
Two of the three doctors were always accompanied by sidekick owls. Mid-Nite was created by DC Comics prior to the creation of Daredevil by its competitor Marvel making Mid-Nite the first superhero ever to exhibit a physical impairment.
The blindness of the three Mid-Nite characters originated from varying reasons:
- Charles McNider, a surgeon, was called one night to remove a bullet from a witness set to testify against mobsters. A mobster threw a grenade into the room, killing the witness and blinding McNider. While he was recovering an owl crashed into his window, tore the bandages off his eyes driving him to the realization he can still see but only in perfect pitch black darkness.
- Beth Chapel who first appeared as Jade of Infinity Inc. was rushed to her hospital for treatment was blinded by an oxygen explosion only to be rescued by Hour-man's son who has taken McNider's drug to enhance his vision in the dark. Beth uses the same drug to treat her blindness. They both end up taking the mantles of their predecessors, Mid-Nite and Hour-man, however Beth takes the title Midnight (a spelling change) instead.
- Pieter Cross is the third Mid-Nite and the second to use it in original spelling in the comics. As a baby he was delivered by the original Doctor Mid-Nite. His crime fighting career starts before his blindness and as he fights Praeda Industries a villainous organization. The company at some point drugs him and he gets involved in a car accident. After the accident he discovers he possesses the ability to see in pitch black darkness at which point he takes the name of Doctor Mid-Nite and joins the JSA,
