If you haven't watched Inside Out, then you are missing out on a lot. It is without doubt one of the best animated features of all time. Inside out is not just about the story and the funny but is also a very educational to both kids and parents.
Understanding that having different emotion is fine, is key to raising a normal child. And for a kid understanding how their emotions work in their teens is key to understanding that while what they are going through is normal their continuous mood swings and inexplicable rebellion at times are not a pretty picture they draw.
The movie at first is seemingly about Riley and her family but soon we realize the real stars of the movie are Riley's emotions.
After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.
So yes the movie might be about Riley in part but mostly about her five major emotions. Three of young Riley's emotions are portrayed as well by some of the funniest TV actresses. Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) voices Joy and she does a great role at that. Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project) is as funny as she has always been as she voices Disgust. Sadness is voiced by Phyllis Smith (The Office) and she just cracks you up throughout the movie.
Lewis Black who does a great job at voicing Anger makes the emotion sound extremely funny and not just because of the awesome writing but also because of how the viewer as an adult or a teenager would easily relate to the emotion and probably deep inside think, "Am i that stupid when I get angry?" And before you wonder, the answer is yes, sometimes, in fact most times we are all extremely stupid when we get angry, we don't think, we don't process; we just react.
Fear as well was extremely funny all the way through.
This movie is rated on IMDb as one of the top 250 movies of all time and it is indeed worthy of its ranking. If you haven't watched it yet I would tell you to abandon your PC, tablet, laptop, or whatever it is you are using to read through this and go watch it right now. It is totally worth it. A 9.0 out of 10.0 is the least I can rate this movie with.
