Gotham Season 3: Who Is The Riddler?

In a one-story pink house, there was a pink person, a pink cat, a pink fish, a pink computer, a pink chair, a pink table, a pink telephone, a pink shower, everything was pink! What color were the stairs?

That is the kind of thing you would hear the man around whom this comic book story revolves, The Riddler. And while the answer to this riddle is that there aren't any stairs, it's a one-story house, our character is a man fond of puzzles and riddles, fond of them enough to incorporate them in his criminal plots.

Edward Nigma (or Nygma) is a supervillain in the DC comics universe based in Gotham and known to be a foe of Batman. He is a smooth talker with high IQ, nonetheless he also has a hot temper fueled by his narcissism, histrionic behavior and an obsessive-compulsive need to devise riddles and puzzles.

The Egomaniac in his early years feels the need for the glory of solving a puzzle the fastest in a contest held by his teacher leading him to sneak into his teacher's office one night to learn and train to solve the puzzle in under a minute, and that he achieves. He becomes obsessed with puzzles and riddles and starts his career as a carnival employee cheating his customers out of their money using his riddles and puzzles.

Longing for a bigger challenge he adopts the Riddler's costume and challenges Batman with the same kind of riddles and puzzles he is obsessed with. While he has no superhuman abilities his IQ and his criminal strategies are his strongest suits.

Cory Michael Smith, the actor portraying Nygma on the FOX series Gotham, stated that his character will be going full-on Riddler in the upcoming season of Gotham.

It is of note here that in the series the version that is portrayed is that of a forensic scientist working for the Gotham City Police Department. Nonetheless, the character still displays the same passions of the Riddler in the Comic Books.

Gotham returns for a third season this fall on FOX.
