American Gothic Season 1, Episodes 2 through 7 Review (Spoiler Warning)

Okay, so more on 'American Gothic'.

So let's get to the point real quick here. Right after she kills her husband, Madeline Hawthorne tries to rid the house of everything of his to prevent Brady (Her cop son-in-law from getting hold of his DNA to find out whether or not he is 'SBK'). She even goes to incinerating his body. When questioned about the bell collection in the shed by Cam, Tessa and Alison, Madeline tells them that their father was obsessed by true crime stories and then reveals he suffered from dementia in the months before his passing and became convinced he was SBK. She also urges them not to share their findings with anyone. Tessa soon figures out that her mother made up the whole dementia story.

While Brady is on his hunt for Mitchell's DNA he ends up stumbling upon a photo of Cam wearing the same belt found along with the tunnel victim.

Following all this we meet another star of our show for the first time Catalina Sandino Moreno who portrays the role of Christina Morales, a doctor and the daughter of the last 'SBK' victim, whom Garrett seems to be stalking. Cam as well finds video recordings of himself when he takes his son to his childhood therapist, upon viewing these videos it seems that Cam as a child had some close to psychopathic tendencies of his own.

We also see Madeline selling the concrete company after Mitchell's will indicates she is the sole proprietor of everything the old man owned.

Soon Cam becomes a suspect in the SBK murders and he is soon proven innocent as well after a DNA test, however that very same test also reveals that a Hawthorne is the killer.

In the meanwhile, and throughout most of these events Garrett has gotten close enough to Christina he ends up dating her.

By the end of the sixth episode it is revealed that Mitch Hawthorne is indeed the serial killer 'SBK' or is he? So we get the usual Alison spinning the whole situation in her favor during a press conference in which she initially intended to withdraw from the mayoral race, you know the whole I am my own man type of spin and somehow her words sound inspiring enough for her supporters to applaud and cheer her and she is back in the race. I know, she is such a self-centered person.

Before the reveal though of Mitch Hawthorne being the killer the cops are initially quiet confident the killer is Garrett. Realizing his relationship with Christina, they contact her while she is out camping with him and when she gets the message a hot argument ends with stabbing him almost to death.

Following all this and after Garrett wakes up in the hospital, Madeline visits him and gives him a short speech about how things being blamed on Mitchell is better than 'them' finding out the truth. He realizes at some point during their conversation that Madeline killed his father and asks her in a wondering tone if she would do the same to him if he were to decide to tell the truth.

By the end of the seventh episode Brady and Cutter (the lead detective on the case) realize that SBK had an accomplice.

Amidst all these events again the most amazing performance was that of Gabriel Bateman. Jack seems to grow more psychopathic each episode. The look in that kid's eye as he portrays this role will scare you off kids, human beings, and living things in general. There is that one scene where he tries to convince his cousins (Alison's children) to run over the swimming pool's cover and they almost drown. The boy doesn't even move a muscle or cry for help, he just watches the two kids drown, with a ton of satisfaction in his eyes to the extent that you are almost convinced the actor is the character.

Verdict

During the six episodes we are reviewing here, there are moments you will lose interest in the show. The show decides to take you into side stories, ones that I didn't even care enough to spoil cause they were just meaningless. However, the elements of the first episode are still available otherwise. Some of the roles are not all that well played. However, the roles of Brady, Madeline, Jack, Garrett and Christina are decently well done.

Jack's character is particularly very well portrayed. That kid is scary. His acting is again so good at some point you just start hating the kid, as in the actor himself kind of like how you end up thinking of evil and sadist Joffrey Baratheon (Game of Thrones) every time you see the actor Jack Gleeson or hear of him.

Right now I am completely lost with who the killer might be, I have more than one theory about at least the accomplice of Mitchell Hawthorne (if Mitchell was even one of the two murderers):

- The accomplice is only Madeline, which would explain how she is running left and right, always hiding something or destroying some kind of evidence or lead on the case.

- The accomplice is Cam. Sort of like a Dexter Morgan situation. On 'Dexter' we saw in flashbacks a father who helps his son with murderous tendencies by giving him an outlet in killing bad people, murderers who end up not being convicted by the law. What if we have a similar situation here. Let's say Cam was psychopathic at some point. Whether or not he took it after Mitchell, Mitchell would have either helped him to quench his thirst for blood or just quenched his own thirst side by side with his. In all cases it is a possibility and it would seriously explain why Jack is the way he is, the entire family must have a hereditary loose screw.

- The same that applies for Cam could simply be applied to Tessa, as much as she seems like the innocent sister, she might be the last person the show want us to think of while they are planning to surprise us with her at some point.

- What if it is Alison, I mean that would be just pure karmic justice. She is selfish and self-centered and seems to think she is better than all her siblings.

Anyway all in all, the show needs to drop all the unnecessary plot lines that they keep trying to prolong the story with and just focus on the main story, I would rather watch eight entertaining episodes than ten or twelve episodes with two to four absolutely boring episodes.
